Welcome to Stankonia – the blog of a feminist hip hop head. I’m here for hip hop and feminism. To speak against misogyny and slut-shaming. To publicly address the conflict I live – loving a genre of music widely misused as an avenue for dismissing women as sexual and thus shameful beings. The double standard – female, male and otherwise – exists in elements outside of hip hop but when music is your source of salvation and peace that many times no longer gives peace, well shit, it becomes a problem I can’t ignore. If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that silence will not protect me.
Titled in homage to Outkast’s 4th studio album, this blog is a platform for fellow feminists, hip hop heads and anyone in the world to explore the intersections of hip hop, sexuality and identity. I don’t know where Stankonia will lead & you’re all welcome to join me.
